All units will review data in Field Maps for accuracy. DIV S will continue road repairs on Forest Road 442 (Gallegos area) and Pot Creek and DIV V will continue assessments. The Repair Group will continue chipping and fencing in the Mora Valley and completing mechanical work as road conditions allow. Current and forecasted precipitation will give give slopes, roads, and drainages no chance to dry and stabilize. Heavy equipment operations are not likely to occur given soft roads and unstable slopes.
Resources continue on-going assessment and light suppression repair work where environmental conditions permit. A holdover fire, also called a sleeper fire, is a fire that remains dormant for a considerable time. The Hermits Peak and Calf Canyon Fires are no longer split into two zones and are now being managed as one fire by Great Basin Incident Management Team 7 under Incident Commander Mike Johnston. As increasing portions of the east side of the east side of the fire have become contained, fire managers have been able to reduce the number of Incident Management Teams needed to manage this fire. The Calf Canyon Fire was caused by a pile burn holdover from January that remained dormant under the surface through three winter snow events before reemerging in April. The Hermits Peak Fire is burning through mixed conifer in steep, rugged terrain that poses challenges for firefighter access. Named the Hermits Peak Fire, the wildfire began approximately 12 miles northwest of Las Vegas, NM at the base of Hermits Peak in the Pecos Wilderness. It was declared a wildfire at approximately 4:30 p.m. Although forecasted weather conditions were within parameters for the prescribed fire, unexpected erratic winds in the late afternoon caused multiple spot fires that spread outside the project boundary.
